Becoming a Master Marketer - Building a Warm Market

Thursday, July 06, 2006

What do you do if you've really, truly burned through your warm market? Can you succeed in USANA? Absolutely! Not everyone's family and friends are as supportive as mine were. If the people you know are simply not going to listen to one more opportunity presentation...take heart. The solution is relatively simple. Build a new warm market.

This requires passion, persistence and patience but you are going to be a much happier, healthier and wealthier person for your efforts. There are over six billion people on this planet. I guarantee there are at least two of those six billion who want to build a business with you. Here are some of my favorite ideas on where and how to find them:

Volunteer. Charitable causes unite people with similar values. Check with your favorite charitable organization to see if you can help with an upcoming fundraiser. If you don't have a favorite charity, call me. I'll introduce you to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation chapter in your own community. You'll meet lots of wonderful, caring people.

Meet your neighbors. We don't do this enough any more, do we? My sister Sydney and her husband Lee host an annual 4th of July breakfast for their entire neighborhood every year. Host a block party, have a potluck, invite the kids. People will get to know you, trust you and like you.

Join a club. What a fun way to build relationships. Do you love to read? My mother has belonged to a book club for over forty years. And guess what? Most of those women are on the USANA products. This could be anything...cycling, bird watching, dancing, whatever your heart desires.

Speak. Offer to be a guest speaker for a special interest group. Almost every community has groups that hold monthly breakfast or luncheon meetings. I recently gave a Sense presentation at a Cystic Fibrosis Guild luncheon. The women loved it - and several became Preferred Customers.

Attend Seminars. Lots of successful people attend free financial seminars. Watch for notices in your newspaper. You can also call financial institutions and get on their mailing lists. You'll become better educated and make new friends at the same time.

Take a Class. Adult education is an incredible value! Enroll in a class that lasts several weeks so you have the opportunity to interact with other class members. I started a new bible study class just last night and met twelve wonderful people.

Travel. Go on a group tour. Bud and Bunny Barth (USANA Diamond Directors and dear personal friends) toured the Holy Land last year. They brought home some fascinating souvenirs including several new distributors.

Buy Season Tickets. I've met lots of people at the San Diego Padres games because the same people are always in the same seats. We get a bit rowdy but during the boring innings there's plenty of time to visit.

Go to a book signing. Offer to read at your child's school. Join a fan club. Take a gourmet cooking class. Organize a blood drive. Host a luncheon. Participate in clean up day at the beach. Go back to church. Train with a group to run a marathon. Work on your local election board. Well, you get the idea.

So...if you've found yourself bemoaning the fact that you have no warm market, build a new one. It's so easy to meet people if you're involved in activities you truly enjoy.

INITIATING A CONVERSATION

In a previous entry I promised to share some ways to initiate a conversation with your new warm market. First of all, remember to be authentic and genuine. Always focus on the friendship first. If you view people you're meeting as potential friends rather than prospects, you're going to have a much more enjoyable experience - and so will they!

I always try to give a genuine compliment. It amazes me how looking someone directly in the eyes and complimenting them opens their heart. From there it becomes easy to ask questions such as:

What do you do when you're not out cleaning up the beach?
Do you have children?
What brought you here today?
Have you always been a Padres fan?
Do you come to these financial seminars regularly?

The most successful marketers in our industry are master relationship builders. You become a master by focusing on the friendship first. Initiate a conversation by:

1. Giving a genuine compliment
2. Asking questions
3. Listening to the answers to find commonalities
4. Building a conversation around those common interests or experiences

Before you know it, you'll have a new warm market - friends you genuinely care for. And guess what? Some of those new friends are looking for business partners!
